# Animated GIF, WebP and APNG > Browser-only file conversion. Selected files are processed on this device and are not uploaded to a conversion server. Source: https://localconverter.tech/animation-convert Move a short animation between GIF, animated WebP and APNG while controlling maximum width, looping and the selected time window. Use it to prepare a format suited to a browser, document or messaging workflow. Compare playback and transparency after conversion because animation formats handle colours and timing differently. ## Useful tasks - Make an animated WebP from a GIF - Export an APNG for a compatible application - Create a smaller-width copy of an animation ## Steps 1. **Choose the animation source**: Upload one GIF, WebP, APNG or supported PNG image. Check that the intended motion is present in the file before changing its output format. 2. **Choose format and width**: Select GIF, WebP or APNG and set the maximum width. Smaller frames reduce the decoded-pixel load and may make the output easier to share. 3. **Select timing and looping**: Enter start and length for the portion you want. Keep loop at minus one to use source behaviour, or choose the available explicit loop setting. 4. **Create and compare playback**: Run the conversion, download the animation and play it through. Check frame timing, transparent edges, palette changes and the loop behaviour in the destination viewer. ## Settings - **Output format**: Choose output format according to the result you need. Available choices: GIF; WEBP; APNG. The initial selection is GIF. - **Maximum width**: Maximum width accepts values from 16 to 1200, using whole numbers. The initial value is 480. Change it for a specific output requirement, then check the result before processing more files. - **Loop count (-1 = source, 0 = forever)**: Loop count (-1 = source, 0 = forever) accepts values from -1 to 100, using whole numbers. The initial value is -1. Change it for a specific output requirement, then check the result before processing more files. - **Start (seconds)**: Start (seconds) accepts values from 0 to 7200, in increments of 0.1. The initial value is 0. Change it for a specific output requirement, then check the result before processing more files. - **Length (seconds)**: Length (seconds) accepts values from 0.1 to 120, in increments of 0.1. The initial value is 20. Change it for a specific output requirement, then check the result before processing more files. ## A GIF converted for web use A short looping GIF needs a WebP version for a compatible page. Select WebP, a maximum width of 480 and source loop behaviour. Create the output and compare its visual quality, actual size and playback with the original GIF. ## Check the result Upload a file, adjust settings and run the tool. All processing uses the local engine. Media jobs are bounded to 120 seconds; animations to 240 frames, 30 seconds and 64 million decoded pixels. Open the saved output in the app or workflow where you plan to use it. Check one representative result before repeating the same settings with more files. The original files stay unchanged. ## Limits - Files are processed on this device. Browser memory and engine-specific limits apply. Save results before reloading. - Media jobs are bounded to 120 seconds; animations to 240 frames, 30 seconds and 64 million decoded pixels. - Upload one file with a combined size of at most 100 MB. The completed output must fit within 200 MB. - Files are checked by the local engine; a matching filename alone is not proof of valid contents. - Selections and completed jobs stay available while you navigate inside this tab. Use My files to revisit results. Reloading or closing the tab clears the workspace; download results you want to keep first. ## Questions ### Does conversion always make the file smaller? No. File size depends on frame content, dimensions, timing and the selected format. Animated WebP can be useful for some artwork, while APNG may retain sharp transparent graphics at a larger size. Compare the actual result. ### What does loop minus one mean? Minus one uses the source animation’s loop behaviour when that information is available. Zero requests continuous looping, and positive values request the selected loop count. Check playback in the application that will display the output. ### Are the original frame delays kept? The converter uses source frame delays for the selected time window, subject to supported minimum timing and encoding behaviour. Different viewers can still interpret very short delays differently, so test fast animations in their intended destination. ### Which limits apply to conversion? The animation workflow permits up to two hundred forty decoded frames, thirty seconds of output and sixty-four million decoded pixels. Large dimensions multiplied across many frames can exceed the pixel bound before reaching the frame-count limit. ### Does Animated GIF, WebP and APNG upload files to another service? Processing runs in this browser, on your device. Files and pasted input are not uploaded to a conversion server. The website and required engine assets must load first; large operations depend on available device memory. ### Can I continue after changing pages? Selections and completed jobs stay available while you navigate inside this tab. Use My files to revisit results. Reloading or closing the tab clears the workspace; download results you want to keep first. ## Related guides - [Compress image](https://localconverter.tech/compress-image.md) - [Resize image](https://localconverter.tech/resize-image.md) - [Crop & rotate image](https://localconverter.tech/crop-image.md) - [HEIC / HEIF converter](https://localconverter.tech/heic-converter.md) - [JPG to JPG](https://localconverter.tech/jpg-to-jpg.md) - [JPG to PNG](https://localconverter.tech/jpg-to-png.md)
