# Extract video or GIF frames > Browser-only file conversion. Selected files are processed on this device and are not uploaded to a conversion server. Source: https://localconverter.tech/extract-frames Sample still frames from a video or GIF and download them together in a ZIP. Choose a segment, sampling rate, width and PNG or JPG output to create reference images without taking manual screenshots. Use the frame set for review, contact sheets or selecting a useful visual moment. ## Useful tasks - Collect reference frames from a clip - Create screenshots at regular intervals - Find candidate stills for a contact sheet ## Steps 1. **Add a video or GIF**: Choose one supported source with a known duration. Identify the segment whose frames you need rather than sampling an entire long file unnecessarily. 2. **Choose sampling and size**: Enter start, length, frames per second and maximum width. The export is limited to two hundred forty frames and sixty-four million decoded pixels. 3. **Select a frame format**: Choose PNG for sharp image content or JPG for photographic reference frames. Run the extraction to encode the sampled frames and package them in a ZIP. 4. **Inspect the frame collection**: Download and unpack the ZIP, then review the numbered images in sequence. Check sampling density and dimensions before selecting frames for a report or contact sheet. ## Settings - **Frame format**: Choose frame format according to the result you need. Available choices: PNG; JPG. The initial selection is PNG. - **Frames per second**: Frames per second accepts values from 1 to 10, using whole numbers. The initial value is 1. Change it for a specific output requirement, then check the result before processing more files. - **Maximum width**: Maximum width accepts values from 16 to 1600, using whole numbers. The initial value is 800. Change it for a specific output requirement, then check the result before processing more files. - **Start (seconds)**: Start (seconds) accepts values from 0 to 7200, in increments of 0.1. The initial value is 0. Change it for a specific output requirement, then check the result before processing more files. - **Length (seconds)**: Length (seconds) accepts values from 0.1 to 120, in increments of 0.1. The initial value is 20. Change it for a specific output requirement, then check the result before processing more files. ## Regular stills from a demonstration A ten-second demonstration needs one reference image per second. Set start to the demonstration’s beginning, length 10 and frame rate 1, then export PNG at width 800. Unpack the ZIP and choose the clearest frames for a written walkthrough. ## Check the result Upload a file, adjust settings and run the tool. All processing uses the local engine. Media jobs are bounded to 120 seconds; animations to 240 frames, 30 seconds and 64 million decoded pixels. Open the saved output in the app or workflow where you plan to use it. Check one representative result before repeating the same settings with more files. The original files stay unchanged. ## Limits - Files are processed on this device. Browser memory and engine-specific limits apply. Save results before reloading. - Media jobs are bounded to 120 seconds; animations to 240 frames, 30 seconds and 64 million decoded pixels. - Upload one file with a combined size of at most 100 MB. The completed output must fit within 200 MB. - Files are checked by the local engine; a matching filename alone is not proof of valid contents. - Selections and completed jobs stay available while you navigate inside this tab. Use My files to revisit results. Reloading or closing the tab clears the workspace; download results you want to keep first. ## Questions ### Does this save every source frame? The selected frames-per-second setting samples the video at that rate rather than guaranteeing every original frame. Increase the rate for denser sampling, while keeping the resulting frame count and decoded-pixel total within the export bounds. ### What is included in the ZIP? The ZIP contains numbered PNG or JPG still images from the selected segment. It does not contain a reconstructed video, audio track or separate animation project, so use it as a collection of image assets. ### Why can a short export exceed limits? Decoded pixels depend on frame dimensions multiplied by the sampled frame count. A short but high-resolution sequence can exceed sixty-four million pixels even below two hundred forty frames; reduce width or sampling rate to fit. ### Which frame format is best for a screen recording? PNG is often useful for interface text and sharp lines because it avoids JPEG compression artefacts. JPG can be suitable for photographic footage when smaller reference images matter more than perfectly crisp text or edges. ### Does Extract video or GIF frames upload files to another service? Processing runs in this browser, on your device. Files and pasted input are not uploaded to a conversion server. The website and required engine assets must load first; large operations depend on available device memory. ### Can I continue after changing pages? Selections and completed jobs stay available while you navigate inside this tab. Use My files to revisit results. Reloading or closing the tab clears the workspace; download results you want to keep first. ## Related guides - [GIF to video](https://localconverter.tech/animation-to-video.md) - [Video to animated WebP, APNG or GIF](https://localconverter.tech/video-to-animation.md) - [Compress or trim video](https://localconverter.tech/compress-video.md) - [Crop, rotate, speed or reverse video](https://localconverter.tech/transform-video.md) - [MP4 to WEBM](https://localconverter.tech/mp4-to-webm.md) - [MP4 to MOV](https://localconverter.tech/mp4-to-mov.md)
