# Remove background > Browser-only file conversion. Selected files are processed on this device and are not uploaded to a conversion server. Source: https://localconverter.tech/remove-background Separate the main subject from a photograph and save it on a transparent PNG background. A local segmentation model estimates the subject mask, with a soft edge by default and an optional cutoff. Use the result for product layouts or presentation cutouts, then inspect delicate edges before placing it. ## Useful tasks - Prepare a product cutout - Isolate a portrait for a slide - Remove a simple photo background ## Steps 1. **Choose a clear photograph**: Add one supported still image with a distinct subject, within sixteen million pixels. Good separation between the subject and background gives the model a clearer task. 2. **Choose edge behaviour**: Leave mask cutoff at zero for soft edges, or set a cutoff to turn the estimated mask into a harder selection around the subject. 3. **Create the transparent cutout**: Run Create output to apply the local subject mask. The result is a transparent PNG, and existing source transparency is retained in the combined mask. 4. **Inspect the subject edges**: Download the PNG and examine hair, holes and low-contrast edges against a contrasting background. Refine the cutout elsewhere if the automatic mask misses important details. ## Settings - **Mask cutoff (0 = soft)**: Mask cutoff (0 = soft) accepts values from 0 to 254, using whole numbers. The initial value is 0. Change it for a specific output requirement, then check the result before processing more files. ## A product cutout for a slide A small product photograph needs to sit on a coloured presentation slide. Leave the cutoff at zero and create the transparent PNG. Place it over the slide colour and inspect reflections, fine handles and the outer edge for unwanted background remnants. ## Check the result Upload a supported file, adjust the settings and create the output. Local U²-Net small segmentation model. Fine hair and low-contrast subjects may require further editing. Transparent PNG output. Open the saved output in the app or workflow where you plan to use it. Check one representative result before repeating the same settings with more files. The original files stay unchanged. ## Limits - Files are processed on this device. Browser memory and engine-specific limits apply. Save results before reloading. - Local U²-Net small segmentation model. Fine hair and low-contrast subjects may require further editing. Transparent PNG output. - Upload one file with a combined size of at most 100 MB. The completed output must fit within 200 MB. - Files are checked by the local engine; a matching filename alone is not proof of valid contents. - Selections and completed jobs stay available while you navigate inside this tab. Zero keeps the model’s soft mask, including partially transparent edges. A nonzero cutoff converts the mask to a harder selection. That can remove faint background but can also make hair or other fine details look abrupt. ### Can I choose the subject manually? The tool estimates the subject with a local U²-Net small segmentation model. It does not provide a painted selection or manual subject picker, so difficult scenes may need further editing after the PNG is created. ### Why are some edges imperfect? Fine hair, transparent materials and low contrast between subject and background can confuse segmentation. Inspect the PNG over its intended background, since an edge that looks acceptable on white may reveal remnants on a dark slide. ### What image size is supported? Background removal accepts at most sixteen million input pixels. The broader still-image limit does not override this smaller model-specific bound; resize a larger photo while retaining useful subject detail before trying it here. ### Does Remove background upload files to another service? Processing runs in this browser, on your device. Files and pasted input are not uploaded to a conversion server. The website and required engine assets must load first; large operations depend on available device memory. ### Can I continue after changing pages?
