TAR to ZIP Converter
Convert TAR to ZIP locally with Browser. See output settings, step-by-step instructions, format limitations and common questions.
TAR to ZIP
Repackage regular files and folders from TAR into ZIP. The converter checks member paths and expanded size before building a new archive, keeping the file contents and folder structure. It deliberately does not carry over timestamps, permissions, encryption, links or special filesystem entries.
- Prepare a ZIP container for an app that does not accept TAR.
- Create a fresh archive copy while keeping the original untouched.
- Move regular file contents through a bounded local archive workflow.
How to use TAR to ZIP
Select your TAR files
Use Select File or drop supported TAR files into the upload area. Each file creates a separate ZIP result. Check that the filename extension matches the contents and that the original opens correctly before adding a larger batch.
Choose the output settings
Open Options beside a selected file. Compression level is available for this TAR to ZIP operation. Save options to apply them to that file; other files in a batch can use different settings.
Convert to ZIP
Select Convert to add the files to the local queue. Files run one at a time, with real progress where the engine provides it. You can cancel a queued or running job and retry a failed result after correcting its input or settings.
Download and check the result
Selections and completed jobs stay available while you navigate inside this tab. Use My files to revisit results. Reloading or closing the tab clears the workspace; download results you want to keep first.
Understand the settings
- Compression level
- Set the archive compression level. Higher values may take longer to process. Default: 5.
Confirm the container and its contents
Start with an archive containing notes.txt and an images folder. Convert it, then open the new ZIP container with an archive reader and compare the member names and file contents. TAR output is uncompressed; another container is not guaranteed to make the same files smaller.
Check your result
Check the member list after repacking. Unsafe paths, duplicate names, links, special entries, corrupt checksums and expansion beyond the supported budget cause a failure rather than a partial successful download.
Source and output formats
About TAR
Packages files and folders in a single archive. TAR output is uncompressed; permissions and timestamps are not preserved.
About ZIP
Packages files in a widely supported archive. Local tools check file paths and enforce expansion limits.
What to know before you start
- Files are processed on this device. Browser memory and engine-specific limits apply. Save results before reloading.
- Repackages regular files and folders; timestamps and permissions are not preserved.
- Up to 100 MB expanded and 1,000 entries. Encrypted, unsafe paths, links and special entries are rejected.
- Processing runs in this browser. Large files may exceed your device memory; save results before reloading.
- Up to 20 files per session, 100 MB per file and 200 MB per output. Processing has a 180-second job deadline.
TAR to ZIP: common questions
How do I convert TAR to ZIP?
Choose your TAR files, review Options and the format notes, then select Convert. Download the finished ZIP copy and check it in your destination application. Each input is processed independently; the original file remains unchanged.
Are all archive features preserved?
Archive conversions depend on the selected formats. Review the format limits for handling of folders, timestamps, permissions and compressed contents.
Which settings can I change for TAR to ZIP?
Compression level: Set the archive compression level. Higher values may take longer to process. Default: 5.
Will the result be smaller or better quality?
A successful ZIP conversion does not guarantee a smaller file or recovered detail. Container overhead, compression and the selected settings all affect output size. Check the saved result and keep the source if you might need a different export.
Why did my TAR file fail?
Read the message beside the file. A mismatched extension, corrupt data, unsupported feature or resource limit can prevent conversion. Check that the source opens normally, try the default settings and retry. The app will not offer a successful download for a failed job.
Where are files processed and how long are they kept?
Processing runs in this browser, on your device. Files and pasted input are not uploaded to a conversion server. The website and required engine assets must load first; large operations depend on available device memory.
