Compress or trim audio
Trim a recording and choose a smaller audio format or bitrate. Use Compress or trim audio locally with practical instructions, output settings and format limits.
Compress or trim audio
Make a short audio copy with a chosen format and, for lossy outputs, a chosen bitrate. Select a start time and length to keep only the useful segment. Use it for voice excerpts, reference recordings or smaller listening copies, then compare the sound and actual file size before sharing.
- Trim a voice recording for review
- Create a lower-bitrate MP3 excerpt
- Export a short recording as WAV
How to use Compress or trim audio
Choose the audio recording
Add one supported audio file with a known duration of at most two hours. Check the useful section before choosing a short output segment.
Select start and length
Enter the segment start and its length in seconds. Length is a duration, not an ending timestamp, and the selected segment is limited to 120 seconds.
Choose format and bitrate
Select the output format and bitrate for lossy encoding. WAV, FLAC and AIFF do not use the bitrate setting in the same way as MP3 or M4A.
Encode and listen
Run the tool, download the audio and listen through the start and end. Compare speech clarity and actual size before using the copy in another workflow.
Understand the settings
- Output format
- Choose output format according to the result you need. Available choices: MP3; WAV; FLAC; OGG; M4A; AIFF. The initial selection is MP3.
- Bitrate (kbps)
- Bitrate (kbps) accepts values from 32 to 320, using whole numbers. The initial value is 128. Change it for a specific output requirement, then check the result before processing more files.
- Start (seconds)
- Start (seconds) accepts values from 0 to 7200, in increments of 0.1. The initial value is 0. Change it for a specific output requirement, then check the result before processing more files.
- Length (seconds)
- Length (seconds) accepts values from 0.1 to 120, in increments of 0.1. The initial value is 20. Change it for a specific output requirement, then check the result before processing more files.
A voice excerpt for feedback
A recording contains a useful thirty-second passage beginning at ninety seconds. Enter start 90 and length 30, then choose MP3 at 96 kbps. Download the excerpt and listen for intelligible speech and complete opening and closing words before sending it.
Check your result
Upload a file, adjust settings and run the tool. All processing uses the local engine. Media jobs are bounded to 120 seconds; animations to 240 frames, 30 seconds and 64 million decoded pixels. Open the saved output in the app or workflow where you plan to use it. Check one representative result before repeating the same settings with more files. The original files stay unchanged.
What to know before you start
- Files are processed on this device. Browser memory and engine-specific limits apply. Save results before reloading.
- Media jobs are bounded to 120 seconds; animations to 240 frames, 30 seconds and 64 million decoded pixels.
- Upload one file with a combined size of at most 100 MB. The completed output must fit within 200 MB.
- Files are checked by the local engine; a matching filename alone is not proof of valid contents.
- Selections and completed jobs stay available while you navigate inside this tab. Use My files to revisit results. Reloading or closing the tab clears the workspace; download results you want to keep first.
Compress or trim audio: common questions
Does a lower bitrate always improve compression?
For lossy formats, a lower bitrate generally reduces storage per second but can reduce audible detail. The result also depends on duration and format, so listen to the output rather than selecting bitrate solely from the smallest number.
Why is WAV not smaller at 64 kbps?
WAV and AIFF use uncompressed PCM in this workflow, while FLAC uses lossless encoding. The bitrate control is applied to lossy outputs such as MP3, OGG and M4A, rather than forcing those other formats to a lossy bitrate.
Is length an end time?
No. Length is the duration after the chosen start. Start 90 and length 30 selects up to thirty seconds beginning ninety seconds into the source, with the actual segment shortened if the recording ends earlier.
Can this improve an already compressed recording?
Re-encoding cannot restore audio information lost in an earlier compressed source. It can create a more convenient format or smaller excerpt, but repeated lossy encoding may add artefacts, so use the best source you have.
Does Compress or trim audio upload files to another service?
Processing runs in this browser, on your device. Files and pasted input are not uploaded to a conversion server. The website and required engine assets must load first; large operations depend on available device memory.
Can I continue after changing pages?
