Convert Markdown, HTML and Office text

Move a document’s headings, paragraphs and tables between formats. Use Convert Markdown, HTML and Office text locally with practical instructions, output settings and format.

A practical guide

Convert Markdown, HTML and Office text

Convert self-contained text documents between Markdown, HTML, DOCX, RTF, ODT and EPUB with Pandoc. The workflow focuses on headings, paragraphs, lists and other semantic structure rather than matching page layout. Use it for editable drafts and publishing pipelines, with a review of structure and formatting in the destination application.

  • Turn Markdown prose into DOCX
  • Create HTML from a structured text document
  • Convert an ODT draft into Markdown

How to use Convert Markdown, HTML and Office text

  1. Choose a self-contained source

Add a supported Markdown, HTML, DOCX, RTF or ODT file. Remove unsupported active or external resources and use a text-focused source suitable for structural conversion.

  2. Select the destination syntax

Choose Markdown, HTML, DOCX, RTF, ODT or EPUB. Consider the destination’s representation of headings, lists and tables rather than expecting identical physical pages.

  3. Convert document structure

Run Process document to translate the source with Pandoc. The conversion writes a standalone output and rejects unsupported resource dependencies instead of fetching them remotely.

  4. Review the editable document

Download and open the output in an appropriate editor. Check heading levels, lists, emphasis and tables before applying any destination-specific page layout or publication styles.

Understand the settings

Output
Choose output according to the result you need. Available choices: MD; HTML; DOCX; RTF; ODT; EPUB. The initial selection is DOCX.

A Markdown draft for Word review

A text-focused Markdown draft has headings, paragraphs and lists and needs reviewer comments in Word. Select DOCX and convert. Open the result to check heading hierarchy and list numbering, then apply any page-layout styling needed by the reviewing organisation.

Check your result

Choose a file, adjust the settings, then download the result. Pandoc preserves semantic structure; this is not a page-layout renderer. External and embedded active resources are rejected. Optional browser mode uses bundled Pandoc WASM, with a 10 MB input budget and no direct PDF output. Open the saved output in the app or workflow where you plan to use it. Check one representative result before repeating the same settings with more files. The original files stay unchanged.

What to know before you start

  • Files are processed on this device. Browser memory and engine-specific limits apply. Save results before reloading.
  • Pandoc preserves semantic structure; this is not a page-layout renderer. External and embedded active resources are rejected. Optional browser mode uses bundled Pandoc WASM, with a 10 MB input budget and no direct PDF output.
  • Upload one file with a combined size of at most 100 MB. The completed output must fit within 200 MB.
  • Pasted text and uploaded text have operation-specific UTF-8 byte limits. Productivity tools accept up to 1 MiB (1,048,576 bytes); non-ASCII characters can use several bytes each. If a file is selected, it takes priority over pasted text.
  • Selections and completed jobs stay available while you navigate inside this tab. Use My files to revisit results. Reloading or closing the tab clears the workspace; download results you want to keep first.

Convert Markdown, HTML and Office text: common questions

Will the output match every original page?

No. Pandoc converts semantic document structure rather than acting as a page-layout renderer. Use Office to PDF or local HTML rendering when the task depends on visual pagination, fonts and precise placement instead of editable structure.

Can Markdown include images in this workflow?

Text inputs with embedded or external resource references are restricted, including Markdown image syntax in this workflow. Prepare a self-contained text-focused source without those resources, or use a rendering tool better suited to page assets and visual layout.

Does this run scripts from HTML or Office?

No. Active content and unsupported external resources are rejected. The workflow is intended for document structure conversion, so prepare a source without scripts, macros, RTF fields or external document dependencies before processing it.

What should I check after conversion?

Review headings, list nesting, emphasis, tables and paragraph order in the target editor. Different formats have different structural conventions, so an editable result can still need adjustments before it matches the destination’s publishing or review style.

Does Convert Markdown, HTML and Office text upload files to another service?

Processing runs in this browser, on your device. Files and pasted input are not uploaded to a conversion server. The website and required engine assets must load first; large operations depend on available device memory.

Can I continue after changing pages?

Selections and completed jobs stay available while you navigate inside this tab. Use My files to revisit results. Reloading or closing the tab clears the workspace; download results you want to keep first.
